Why Go Fly Fishing?

Why go fly fishing in the first place?

I asked myself this many times after Jim approached me and asked if I wanted to learn how to fly fish.

When he first asked me I said that I'll have to get back to ya. The reason I said this was as you may know from other pages on the website I really did not feel to comfortable out in the wilderness. I new that Jim was always out there fishing his brains out every time he had a moment and he always seemed to come back in one piece but there was still that lingering fear I was going to be eaten by a big, giant bear.

I talked with Jim about this. He assured me that this was not going to happen and that I basically just have a fear of the unknown, and this will quickly disappear once we get out there a few times and you will see there is really nothing to fear except in catching some fish and having a good time. Well I thought about this and decided to give it a shot.

I'm glad I did.

Why go out fly fishing? Here are some of my reasons and hopefully some will strike a cord with you.
  • Trying something new. A new challenge. This really gets one excited about life again.
  • Meet new people.
  • The kids. If you have kids like I do, what do they want most? Presents? Wrong. Spending more quality time with you is really what they are after. What better of a way to spend quality time together than taking the kids out for a day, morning, or afternoon of fishing. You don't have to fish the whole time, if they get a little bored if the fish are not biting don't get mad instead take a break and go exploring or take a dip if the waters warm. Really the kids will love you for it. My kids just love getting out there. It is something the whole family can enjoy.
  • It is fairly easy to learn. You don't have to be a pro to enjoy this sport. You just have to have some basic skills that you will learn and hopefully practice before you go out. You can learn these in the beginner fly fishing section of the site.
  • Cost. You can get a great fly fishing outfit from Orvis that includes everything you need to get started. Then get some flies from either Blue Fly Cafe Inc. , or Orvis . Grab a fishing license and your all set to go. You can later add more equipment as you get better or as needs arise.
  • You're outside! Self explanatory.
  • Lastly its a whole lot of fun!!!
These are just some of my reasons of why go out fly fishing but I'm sure as you'll discover once you get out there that you will have many of your own.
